FAUNA – LIFE AMONG BEECH TREES AND ROCKS

Great horned owl

The forests of the Jizera Mountains are not only beautiful to look at, but also full of life. The rare, critically endangered fir beetle, whose development takes several years, finds refuge in the rotting wood. The night sky is enlivened by the majestic beech martin, one of the largest butterflies in Europe.

The cool ravines are home to the spotted salamander, while the rocky walls serve as nesting grounds for the peregrine falcon and the great horned owl. The old trees provide a home for the tawny owl and the wood pigeon. Thanks to the extensive forest cover, large carnivores – the lynx and the wolf – have also returned here in recent years.
