Hejnice
The town of Hejnice has been an important pilgrimage site since as early as the 13th century. Its setting impresses at first glance – the northern slopes of the Jizera Mountains create a breathtaking scenery. The town covers an area of 38.41 square kilometres at an altitude of 375 m. It borders with Raspenava, Lázně Libverda and Bílý Potok and, in terms of the broader administrative territories, also with Kořenov, Albrechtice, Josefův Důl, Bedřichov, Mníšek and Oldřichov v Hájích.
Near the Visitation Church is located the Tourist Information Centre. It is located in the building of the town cinema, which, together with the outdoor cinema, offers a wide range of cultural events. Hejnice annually organises the Hejnice Festival on the first weekend in July, an event attracting visitors from far and wide. There is also a campsite and a swimming pool in Hejnice. An ATM and a variety of restaurants and accommodation facilities round out the diverse range of services available in the town.
Hejnice is easily accessible by public transport, both by train from Frýdlant, Liberec and Bílý Potok, as well as by bus. Parking is possible in the town centre and in the car park in Ferdinandov district.
Among the architectural gems of the town are undoubtedly the Visitation Church and the adjacent monastery. Other important buildings worth noticing include birthplace of the Jizera Mountains glassmaking tycoon Josef Riedel, as well as the impressive Emil Simon’s villa, designed by the architect Rudolf Bitzan. In 2019, Hejnice joined the international initiative commemorating Jewish victims of the Holocaust, and the Stones of the Perished, or Stolpersteine, were placed here. Among the natural attractions of the Jizera Mountains, in addition to the beech forests, it is necessary to mention the Poustevníkův kámen (Hermit’s Rock) lookout, which offers a unique view of the town and the surrounding slopes of the Jizera Mountains. A rich network of hiking and cycling trails will take you to attractive places throughout the area.
